The Victorian taxi industry has a fleet of thousands of vehicles that operate in the Melbourne metropolitan area and throughout regional Victoria.

Taxis can be hired by booking over the phone, the internet, mobile phone app, at a designated cab rank or by flagging down a taxi on the street. A taxi is available for hire if its dome light is illuminated.

You can book a taxi by calling 131 008. This is a national taxi service booking number which will connect you to a local taxi service based on your location.

Taxi fares

Taxi fares depend on the distance travelled, duration of journey, time of day and where in Victoria you hire a taxi from. Additional charges arise if the taxi is booked in advance or the journey uses toll roads.

Fares may required to be prepaid for trips between 10pm and 5am.

Rideshare services

An alternative to taxis are ridesharing services. Drivers use their private vehicles to offer on-demand transport to passengers. All bookings are made using a mobile phone app. Available in Melbourne and major regional centres.
