1140 Lighthouse Road
Cape Otway
Victoria
VicRoads Country: map 101 ref A7
The Cape Otway Lightstation is one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia, perched above the cliffs where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait meet.
The heritage buildings and surrounding grounds that were home the lighthouse keepers and their families are now available for the public to enjoy.
The telegraph station contains historical displays related to the lighthouse and its people, while a cafe occupies the assistant lightkeeper's residence and it serves breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea.
For a truly unique holiday, the original head lightkeeper's residence and the lighthouse manager's house offer heritage-style accommodation for couples, families and groups, providing the opportunity to gain an insight into the domestic life of a lighthouse keeper's family.
The Head Lightkeeper's House offers fully self-contained homely accommodation for a large group if the whole house is taken, or it can be divided by a lockable door into a main section and a bed & breakfast suite. The main section sleeps up to 8 people and includes a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge with wood fire and a bathroom. The private bed & breakfast suite can sleep up to 6 people and includes 2 bedrooms, a heritage-style bathroom, and a continental breakfast each day. Enjoy views of the lighthouse and ocean from this stately home with its wide verandahs.
The Manager's House has been newly renovated and can also be divided into a main section and a bed & breakfast suite if required. The main section can sleep up to 8 people in 4 bedrooms, and there is a fully-equipped kitchen and lounge with wood fire. The bed & breakfast suite is ideal for couples and includes a bedroom with king bed, a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a continental breakfast each day.
While there is no TV reception in the area, a selection of DVDs are available. Dinner can be arranged on request in the cafe for a minimum of 6 people. For those who wish to eat out or pick up supplies, the nearest town is Apollo Bay.
When the cafe and grounds close to the public in the late afternoon, guests staying overnight can enjoy the surroundings, spectacular views and amazing sunsets in private.
