Macedon is situated between Gisborne and Woodend, at the foot of Mount Macedon.
Macedon's small commercial centre is located on Victoria Street and features a supermarket, a few speciality shops and restaurants. The town's hotel, located in Smith Street, enjoys the attractive backdrop of Mt Macedon.
Ash Wednesday Park, located across the road from Macedon's railway station, serves as a reminder to the bushfires which tragically destroyed hundreds of homes and thousands of hectares of forest in 1983. The Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve, on Waterfalls Road, includes a community centre and a sports oval. From this reserve begins the Waterfall Walk which proceeds up Waterfalls Road to Stanley Park in neighbouring Mount Macedon. Centennial Park, located opposite the junction of Mount Macedon Road and Honour Avenue, offers a picnic shelter and walking paths through the surrounding lawns. A feature of this park are the several mosaic columns created by local artists.
Around Macedon are a number of historical grand Victorian homes with exquisite English gardens, and is most attractive in autumn when the leaves of the many deciduous trees transform into bright and blazing colours.
The small township of Mount Macedon is 5 kilometres away, along the road that ascends to the peak of Mount Macedon which features a lookout and the landmark Memorial Cross.
